“What Is Street Wear” Project.

“Street wear is a distinctive style of fashion not to be confused with hip hop fashion. Its roots are in skateboarding and the “skatewear” of the 1980s.[1] It was later adopted as an urban fashion in Japan before growing to an international business.[1] An important element to the style is vintage or vintage-style sneakers.[2]

Street wear is youth – it’s a retro 80s look inspired by the sneaker culture and hipsters on New York’s Lower East Side.” But, don’t confuse street wear with Urban fashion – looking like the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is miles away from the dark denim, baggy clothing and white sneakers that defined the inner-city’s Urban look. “American Apparel, H&M, Uniqlo – the whole [design concept] is based on street wear

  • Questions to think about ;
  1. What does street-wear mean to you?
  2. Do you think street-wear has took a negative or positive tool on the youth?
I asked a few people over social networks what it meant to them & here are some of the responses i got
Solomon Of Ill Children :
“hundreds, diamond, HUFF, vans, freshjive,,,, the shit that you see skaters wearing…thats street wear knamean, cuz dey in deez streets, ofcourse they shouldnt be confused with hipsters, hipsters are only in deez streets if everyone else out gnamean…street wear is the totality of clothing worn by skaters n hustlers alike, da niggas out der grindin kgnamean….. (the g and k are silent)”
“i think the people that are influenced by the shit they wear have been effected negatively, i mean, shit, i have a gun on one of my FreshJive shirts mane, knamean, so i mean, if your just picking wearing shit but you don’t know what’s going on there, i’m sure it’s negative, your in a bad place altogether, BUT i also have the FreshJive’s “West Coast” shirt, which i bought because i wear shit that has to do with stuff that has influenced me, on it there’s a picture of 2 cops holding a gun to 2 people that they have cuffed on the ground, (a picture from the rodney king riots)…i’ve encountered many people BECAUSE OF THIS SHIRT, who say yo thats a nice shirt or who asked me “yo wtf is that” and i tell them, it brings us together and raises the awareness and the mental state of niggallahs (haha) city wide…so i think it CAN be negative, but more often than not it is very positive and uniting, PEACE”
Cori from Culver City :
“jeans for sure, as an article of clothing”
” ‎+! it brings upon unity for the youth”
Tyease from LA :
“When i think of street wear i think of something cute and comfortable . For me its something not matching ,just anything !The type of clothes go together but the colors dont ,just something you wear on a mission with a friend or to the mall really quick:)”
” Its a positve toll but it could be negative at times because when some people just throw something on it could be some short shorts and that could make us look bad as a group . You know ?”
Dant Brown from LA
“In my opinion street wear has taken a negative toll on my youth. It seems that people put having “clothing swag” above things that are actually beneficial to their future, thus their priorities are messed up. I know plenty of kids that taking having snapback swag more serious then getting to college. For girls it seems to create a veil of fake self confidence to hide the true insecurity they feel brought on to them by todays harsh society, via media. But in juxtaposition to drugs and shit streetwear cant be that bad”
growing up in LA & on Fairfax and Labrea your mentality on street-ware differs from other, Fairfax, also know as the streetwear duggout, has impacted majority of our youth today negatively & positively, my reason for saying that is because that street has some of the biggest street-wear stores, such as Supreme LA, Diamond LA, Reserve, Hall Of Fame,  & The Hundreds.  Labrea is also a street full of Street-wear holders they have stores such as; Undefeated, Stussy LA, Union, AND &Still.  Street-Wear to me is like a movement clothing wise, people are actually inspired by street-wear so much that they make songs & videos commending the companys, i feel as if street-wear can create a conflict of jealousy inbetween the classes (Rich&Poor) because of the high prices of some of the items,  It also can be negative because it seems like people are letting SW control them & whenever the company drops something they are quick to spend cash on the new release instead of using it for something more beneficial, I think its mainly positive because some of the designs can actually send out a deeper message and it can actually have people thinking and trying to understand the concept & it also can bring unity & peace amongst some of our peers.
WorldWide, over the past couple of years trying to find their selves, our the teens in our youth set out to find something they enjoy doing and one of the main things they enjoyed doing was creating. With that being said, teens started their own clothing line in hopes to give off positive vibes like the street-wear lines do. Some of the clothing lines in LA that are constructing something positive whether it be through their name or through their threads are
-Tribal Society.
-Sublime Supremacy
-Lost Angeles Creations
-KcuFthePopulation
-SEWPUH Brand
-MADCOW
-Oneup Daily
– THE BRAND WITH NO NAME
-The Left Field Theory
-Dert Bag Designs
-WE$T CLOTHING
-PREMIUM LA
-WESTSIDE STORY.
All of those brands stand for something positive & hope to thrive, with your support Rautten Culture aim to get them the attention they deserve.

This is the type of material that should be taught in our schools, that way, parents could better understand the youth and support our movements. I’m looking forward to “Tha Culture” magazine.
