Interview with Ibn Gold (@IbnGold).
first off, we would like to thank you for this opportunity. could you introduce yourself & give a brief description of who you are & what you do.
I’m Ibn Gold a Crescent Heights native, I own Originallity Kills and two brands, I also make music of various forms. You’ve probably seen me in 01 3s or something. Chillin’. For the most part I just do my thing and enjoy life. I generate a lot of interest towards myself without really trying.
I’ve been rapping for years, but honestly I started taking it serious like 4 weeks ago. As for producing, I never really took it serious, I still really don’t know. I just wake up some days like, I feel like making a beat and then I make a grip of beats. Pretty easily, I do it for fun.
what type of beats would you say you create?
I can make any kind, I make trap, trippy fly-lo type beats, jazz beats, golden age hiphop beats. Anything. I have enough resources now, that I can pretty much do whatever I want whenever I want. I have a vinyl collection with well over 400 records. And I use them constantly to make whatever kind of music I’m feeling. I recently made about 4 beats consisting of only Sade samples. That’s pretty cool.
how many beats would you say you create a day?
Well, I don’t make beats everyday. But the days that I do, depending on what kind of beats they are. I’d say no less than 3 and no more than 9.
beside making beats & flowing over them. what would you say is something you enjoying doing in your free time?
i create a lot of things, i read very often. I don’t watch a lot of TV or movies. Usually, out about in the city. Just chillin’. Learning how to code sites and design them as well. So that’s interesting and definitely time consuming.
what happened to originality kills? *if its not too personal.
Oh no! Not personal at all, I still wn Originallity Kills 100%. I’m changing a few things around well actually, a lot of things around. I work on it atleast 3 hours a day, and I don’t miss a day. It will be redropping on 5-22-2012 along with my Ta$te the Gold project. So stay tuned for that. For now, I’m posting on LAliferehab.com so check that outtt
you are also a skateboarder correct? how does that tie in with your schedule ? honestly, i stopped skating a while ago. but when i was skating, it really wasn’t a huge priority so it wasn’t really much of a time taker for me. But i skated atleast once a week on average. it was pretty cool
any producers / artist you want to work with ? if so who & why?
Honestly, nah not really. I’m not even on that level yet. But, Jay Z, NaS, and Ye. Would be the three people I’d want to work with because they inspired me to make music so working with the people who inspired you to chase your dreams, it would be crazy to see what you guys would spark up together. You know?
do you have any big upcoming projects coming up?
Ta$te the Gold is dropping may 22nd along with the re-release of Originallity Kills. And umm, 1 of 2 brands will be dropping this summer. and a grip of random stuff dropping randomly.
name someone who inspires you the most & why.
hmm, toddlers inspire me. they show you how fast time flies and how quick your an adult. and how all the expieriences you go through makes you the person that you are at the end of the day.
i was listening to a lot of music that I wasn’t really listening to before and it like made a light bulb in my head go off that never turned off for 10 hours. And I literally was just on a keyboard at the studio, just sampling and playing around. Having fun.
what inspired you to create “Premo” i know it was a tribute to DJ Premiere but what was the reason behind that?
I watched NaS and Premo do the Illmatic set at SXSW on YouTube and I started getting back into Gangstarr because of that and I just made that beat a few hours after listening to Mass Appeal over and over again.
“trapical illusions”was & is still one of my fav trap beats. what tools did you use to create the sounds 4 that? I used FL Studio a MPK Mini and a MPD 24 to make that. Months on end ago. With a lex luger sound kit, and a youtube tutoriol. That was my first trap beat. It sucks compared to what I’ve made in the studio the past feew weeks ago. But I’m glad that you enjoy that beat, so do I.
